Synhalonia fulvitarsis fulvitarsis Cresson

Extracted from: Timberlake P.H., (1969). A Contribution to the Systematics of North America Species of Synhalonia (Hymenoptera, Apoidea). University of California Publications in Entomology Volume 57

This species was described by Cresson from Colorado and recorded by Patton from Wyoming, and it ranges from the mountains of California as far east as Lawrence, Kansas. Typically the female has the pubescence pale ochreous or white on notum of thorax and base of abdomen, but otherwise black, with scopal hair of hind legs fulvous. Sometimes white bands are more or less developed on abdomen.

Female.Black; hind tibiae and middle and hind tarsi generally ferruginous. Tegulae dark amber at apex. Wings subhyaline, with brownish tinge; nervures dark ferruginous, subcosta black. Pubescence of notum of thorax, including tegulae and tubercles, and sometimes some hairs on occipital margin of head, and that of dorsal part of propodeum and tergite 1 pale ochreous or white; hair of head, thorax, and abdomen otherwise black. Abdomen sometimes with a thin, white arcuate band across middle of tergite 2 and more rarely a thin, narrow, white band across apex of tergites 3 and 4. Hair of legs mainly blackish, but scopal hair of hind legs and hair of middle tarsi fulvous, becoming more ferruginous on inner side of basitarsi.

Head much broader than long; inner orbits of eyes parallel. Vertex moderately impressed on each side; lateral ocelli their distance apart from nearest eye. Proboscis elongate, reaching beyond front coxae; galeae long, tapering, dull except on inner margin, minutely punctate, and invested with numerous short, erect hairs. Second submarginal cell receiving recurrent nervure one-fifth to one-fourth of its length from apex. Pygidial plate broad at base and narrowly rounded or subacute at apex. Pubescence of head and thorax rather short, erect, and moderately dense, and hair of abdomen mostly short and appressed beyond tergite 1. Clypeus shining, closely or moderately closely punctured, with a more or less distinct median, smooth ridge. Mesonotum dull, with small, close, shallow punctures. Apical depression of tergites 1 and 2 broadly bare and im-punctate across middle of segment. Length about 13-14 mm, anterior wing 9-9.5 mm, width of abdomen about 4.8-5.4 mm.

Male.Black; middle and hind tarsi and small joints of front tarsi ferruginous. Labrum and clypeus pale yellow; clypeal mark strongly notched on each side and reaching or nearly reaching narrow oculoclypeal space. Wings clearer hyaline than usual, nervures dark ferruginous, sub-costa black. Pubescence moderately long and dense, pale ochreous or white on head, thorax, base of abdomen, and legs; hair on hind tibiae and basitarsi fulvous, but that on inner side of tarsi ferruginous. Hair of abdomen black, except on tergite 1.

Head much broader than long; inner orbits of eyes slightly divergent above. Vertex moderately impressed on each side; lateral ocelli slightly closer to margin of eyes than their distance apart. Galeae of proboscis long, tapering, dull, and nearly hairless. Antennae slender, moderately compressed, reaching apex of tergite 1 or slightly beyond; joint 3 three-fourths as long as joint 4. Middle tibiae strongly and roundly excised beneath on apical half, almost acutely angulate on anterior margin before the middle, and with a strong acute process at apex on posterior margin of outer side, more or less concealed by pubescence; middle basitarsi narrowly constricted at base, broadly constricted before apex, which is produced behind in a strong acute process. Clypeus shining, with small, shallow, moderately close punctures. Mesonotum dull, obscurely punctured. Sternite 6 with small, longitudinal impression on each side of base; disk dull except on each side toward base, with low submarginal ridge on each side of median half, and usual submarginal row of short, erect hair, and also at base two well-separated large, dense tufts of rather long, erect, black hair. Sternites 7 and 8 as figured. Parameral lobes of genital armature rather short and thin, broadly widened at base, and widened into subacute point on outer margin of apex, and outer side invested with short, erect, blackish hair except at apex. Length about 11-12 mm, anterior wing 9-10 mm.

Synhalonia fulvitarsis annae Cockerell

Extracted from: Timberlake P.H., (1969). A Contribution to the Systematics of North America Species of Synhalonia (Hymenoptera, Apoidea). University of California Publications in Entomology Volume 57

I have had opportunity to examine only a few specimens of annae, none of them males, but the character of the proboscis, with the fine, erect hair on the maxillary galeae, indicates that these specimens are merely a light form of fulvitarsis. Whether these specimens are individual variants or form a southern subspecies of fulvitarsis is uncertain.

Female.Head and thorax with hair nearly white. Abdomen with broad white bands on tergites 2 to 4, base of tergite 2 narrowly and base of tergites 3 and 4 more broadly black-haired; white bands, especially those on tergites 3 and 4 with numerous erect, blackish hairs interspersed, but many in a row across apical part of elevated part of disk. Hair of tergite 5 black, but narrowly white on each side of apex; its apical band across the middle and hair of tergite 6 on each side of pygidial plate more or less fulvous brown, varying to blackish. Scopal hair of hind legs and hair on middle tarsi fulvous. Otherwise closely resembling fulvitarsis. Length about 13 mm, anterior wing 9 mm.

Extracted from: Cockerell, T.D.A. (1906). Some Bees from Washington State. The Canadian Entomologist pp. 277 - 282.

Male. Length about 13.5 mm.; black, the c1ypeus (except a deep rounded incision on each side) rather light lemon-yellow, the labrum yellowish-white; hair of head and thorax dullish pale ochreous; abdomen with the first segment covered with very pale ochreous hair, the remaining segments with coarse black hair, with no light hair in front of the apical plate, nor any bands; tarsi, especially the small joints, rufescent; hair on inner side of basal joint orange; basal joint of middle tarsi twisted, and with an apical projection; hind spurs normal. Runs in my tables (Tr. Amer. Ent. Soc., 1906) to T. Caliornica (Cr.), from which it is easily separated by the black hair of second abdominal segment, and absence of reddish hair on apical part of abdomen. By the coloration of the abdominal hair, it resembles T. acerba, but that is smaller, and has not the deformed middle tarsi. The closest affinity is no doubt with T. fulvitarsis (Cr.), which has just the same leg-structure. T. Yakimensis differs from fulvitarsis by its more robust form; the hair on second abdominal segment black instead of pale; the absence of a light tuft before the apical plate; the piceous instead of ferruginolls nervmes; the yellowish (instead of white) hair of legs; the dull disc of mesothorax, with less conspicuolls punctures. The facial quadrangle is much longer than broad, the yellow of the c1ypeus almost touches the eye, and the mandibles have no yellow spot. The antennre are practically as infulvitarsis.
