FishBase 1 thumbnail  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features slender body and fins uniform color a: 2nd spine slender, shorter than 3rd Dorsal rays IX, 10; anal rays III, 7; lateral-line scales 44-48; margin of bone under eye l and of preopercle smooth; body very slender, depth 3.2-4.2 in standard length; pelvics short (15-18% of standard length); anal spines slender, 2nd spine shorter than the third and only slightly more robust; lateral line relatively straight on rear 1/2 of body. Silvery white without distinguishing marks, although juveniles may have 3-5 diagonal dark bars on side. Size: to about 23.9 cm. Inhabits sand-mud bottoms of shallow coastal waters, including mangrove estuaries. Depth: 0-30 m?. Southern Baja California and the Gulf of California to Ecuador and the Galapagos.
