Dorsal rays IX, 9-10; anal rays III, 8; lateral-line scales 39-40; margin of bone under eye and of preopercle serrate; body depth 2.2-2.5 in standard length; second anal spine much enlarged, thick and robust; lips noticeably swollen; pectoral fins short, scarcely reaching level of anus.
Silvery white with narrow dark lines corresponding with longitudinal scale rows; pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins yellowish.
Maximum size about 28 cm.
Inhabits sand, mud, and rubble bottoms of coastal waters.
Depth: 0-30 m.
SE Gulf of California to Panama.
