Overview
Main identification features
  • lower gill rakers: 11-12
  • pectoral: not reaching anal fin origin, axil dark
  • 2nd anal fin spine greater than 2nd dorsal fin spine
Body high, rhomboidal (height ~50% of standard length), compressed; nape profile steep, ~straight, to slightly concave; mouth strongly extendible, ends under front edge of pupil; lower border of bone under eye serrated; lower border of preopercle serrated; 11-12 rakers on lower arm of 1st gill arch; dorsal IX, 10, 2nd spine longest; pectoral, length ~ equal head length, reaches part pelvic but not to anus; anal III + 8, 2nd spine thick, long, a little longer than 2nd dorsal spine; 34 lateral line scales.

Body silver, darker on back; thin dark lines along scale rows very evident on upper 1/2 of body; fins dark, spiny dorsal with thin black margin; inside pectoral base dark.

Size: 26 cm.

Habitat: in shallow coastal areas and lagoons.

Depth: 0-30 m?.

Southern Baja and the mouth of the Gulf of California to Ecuador and the Galapagos.
