Overview
Main identification features
  • lines on back: 5-6 ~horizontal
Dorsal fins close together, the first with X-XV spines, the anterior spines much higher than those posteriorly, giving the fin a strongly concave outline; second dorsal fin much lower than first and followed by 8-10 finlets; pectoral fins short, reaching to about level of middle spines of first dorsal fin.

Dark blue on back with a patch of 5-6 ~horizontal black stripes on back extending forward to below anterior part of first dorsal fin; lower sides and belly silvery white; several dark spots usually present on lower sides between pelvic and pectoral fins.

Size: to 92.5 cm; all-tackle world record 11.8 Kg.

Habitat: forms schools in coastal waters and near offshore reefs.

Depth: 1-40 m.

California to the lower 1/2 of the Gulf of California to Peru, including all the offshore islands; also two stray specimens captured in the Hawaiian Islands.
