Head deep; snout shorter than eye, blunt, profile steep; pectoral very long, reaches to tail fin base, I, 13-15; lateral line without branch to pectoral base; pelvic origin nearer pectoral base than anal origin, fin short, not reaching anal origin; anal fin begins before origin of dorsal fin; 22-30 rakers on first gill arch; normally 7 rows of scales between dorsal origin and lateral line; dorsal 13-14 rays; anal 13-14 rays; 18-22 scales before dorsal fin. Juvenile: with nape hump; no chin barbel.
Color: iridescent blue above, silvery below; dorsal fin light grey, anal fin clear, pectoral fin light brown or gray with a light margin along the rear and lower edge; pelvics clear, tail grey. Juveniles: dark bars on the trunk; pectorals transparent with grey areas at front and rear; pelvics dark.
Size: 24 cm.
