FishBase 1 thumbnail  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features use genus Three pairs of barbels, top-most not reaching pectoral fins; top of head smooth, covered with thick skin; bony plate above base of pectoral fin a broad fan; body slender, more so at rear; head length ~30% of standard length; snout rounded; mouth moderately wide; eye diameter ~14% of head length; bone at rear top of head wide, separated by a small bone from the semilunar plate in front of the dorsal fin; groove on top of head moderately deep, extends back to between eyes; jaws with wide bands of small teeth; front of roof of mouth with 2 small tooth plates that are contiguous with long lateral tooth plates; anal 15-18 rays; pectoral 10-11 rays. Upper body blue-black to red-brown; belly white; a silvery white to cream stripe from shoulder to middle of tail base; fins dark. Size: 35 cm. Habitat: marine, coastal waters. Depth: 0-30 m?. A temperate species; nothern Peru to Chile. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed.
