Body moderately depressed; head large, broad, moderately depressed; snout with rounded profile; a large fleshy pad with free rear edge at base of pectoral fin; rear nostril over front edge of eye, front nostril with a simple flap; top jaw with irregular outer row of pointed teeth, & a patch of irregular teeth behind them, a row of canines along side; teeth on lower jaw in 2 rows, outer row larger, 5 pairs of small, pointed incisors at front, followed by row of canines; papillae on head extensively developed, some finger-like, at center of as well as along margin of top lip, 4 small papillae on underside of head behind jaw; anus closer to anal fin origin than to sucker; pectoral 24 rays; sucker with 10 rows of papillae across front section, 2 well separated patches in center; dorsal 14 rays; anal 10 rays; tail 12 rays.
(Preserved fish) Top and sides covered with small dense rusty spots; lower surface green; dorsal and anal clear, with 2 brown stripes; tail: dark brown base, clear outer part with 2 brown bars; pectoral lightly spotted with brown.
