Overview
Main identification features
  • top lip - no papillae
  • front dorsal fin - dark spot
  • dense light brown spots, rear - faint bars
Body well depressed; head large, broad, well depressed; snout with rounded profile; a large fleshy pad with free rear edge at base of pectoral fin; rear nostril over front edge of eye, front nostril with a large 2-lobed flap; top jaw with irregular outer row of pointed teeth, & a patch of irregular teeth behind them, a row of canines along side; teeth on lower jaw in 2 rows, outer row larger, 3 pairs of chisel-like (3-pointed in juveniles) incisors at front, followed by row of large canines; papillae on head small, none along top lip; 5-6 small rakers on 2nd and 3rd gill arches; anus ~midway between anal fin origin and sucker; pectoral 21-23 rays; sucker with 4-8 rows of papillae across front section, 2 widely separated patches in center; dorsal fin medium length, 10-12 rays; anal 8-10 rays; tail 10-12 rays.

Top and sides covered with small dense light brown spots; faint wide dark brown bars on rear 1/2 of body; dorsal with dark spot at front base:; dorsal, tail and anal light brown with clear margins; pectoral rays with small brown spots; undersurface with scattered brown dots.

Size: 7.6 cm.

Habitat: intertidal, enters freshwater.

Depth: 0-10 m?.

El Salvador to Colombia.

Briggs (1955) separated this species into 3 subspecies, G. daedaleus daedaleus, G. d. brachysoma, and G. d. boreus, based on variation in (a) the extent of development in papillae on upper lip margin, (b) eye size, (c) head width, (d) the number and size of papillae at the front of the sucker, (e) the location of the dorsal fin, and (f) the number of anal rays.
