Elongate, with compressed body, head compressed; eyes not tiny, on top of head; mouth terminal, oblique; 3-4 pores behind eye, last at back of operculum; teeth conical, in single rows on upper jaws, no canines on either jaw; dorsal fin VI + I, 14, 2 fins broadly joined, 1st fin low, 3rd spine longest; pelvics fused to form disc; anal fin I, 14; tail fin nearly twice length of head; pectoral short, about as long as pelvic; scales feel smooth (but are finely toothed), present on nape, gill covers and cheeks as well as body, small, 70-81 in lateral series.

Olivaceous; mid flank without dark blotches; a dark bar under eye; second dorsal fin and tail fin spotted or barred, other fins translucent.

Size: 25 cm.

Habitat: sandy beaches near estuaries and deeper soft bottoms in nearshore waters.

Depth: 0-30 m.

El Salvador to Ecuador.
