GOBIOSOMA

GOBIES

First dorsal fin with VII spines, 2nd with 9-13 rays; anal 9-12 rays; pelvics fused in disc; body robust; head rounded, broader than deep; snout blunt; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; tongue round to blunt; head without barbels or with 2 below front nostril; front nostril tubular, rear with raised rim; body scales large, rough; area of body with scales variable, ranges from absent (or with a few scales behind base of pectoral fin plus 2 large very rough scales at base of tail fin) to all of body scaled except the breast, the lower belly and the area on the top of the back forwards from under the middle of the 1st dorsal fin; head scaleless; body with diffuse bars or series of spots.

A new world tropical to warm temperate genus with 17 species; there are 8 endemics in our region.
