Overview
Main identification features
  • upper 1/2 tan + spots, lower purple and brown
  • fins yellow, white, orange

Slender, compressed body; distinctly depressed head; mouth small, terminal, oblique, lower jaw projecting; eye relatively large (>80% of snout length); head without pores; dorsal fins separate, 1st dorsal spines without filaments, VII + I, 10-11 (usually 11); anal fin I, 9-10 (usually 10); pectoral fin 16-18 (usually 17); pelvics partly connected, form a plate rather than a disc, with almost no membrane between spines; no scales.

Reversed color upper 1/2 of head and body light and lower sides and belly dark, dark color does not reach above midline of body. Male: lower body purplish at front, brown at rear; upper body tan with darker mottling; cream crescent shaped bar at tail base with blackish outer edge grading to gold tail fin; dorsal fins yellowish; anal and pelvic fins white; pectoral with orange mottling. Female: lower body dark maroon, upper pale tan with fine brown spots; crescent bar at tail base; first dorsal orange, second dorsal white.

Size: 6.1 cm.

Habitat: rocks on sand, and cobble.

Depth: 1-20 m.

Central Baja and throughout the Gulf of California to Panama.
