Overview
Main identification features
  • mouth ends under eye

Body very elongate and cylindrical; snout very short; eye large, longer than snout and about 6-7 in head length; top lips separate at front; front nostrils not in lips; mouth relatively long, reaching below rear part of eye; teeth pointed, in narrow bands on anterior part of jaws, in single rows on sides, and directed backward; front roof of mouth with single row of large curved teeth; pectoral fin well developed, longer than eye; dorsal and anal fins low, not confluent around tail tip, which is fleshy and lacks a fin.

Generally pale tan to whitish with numerous brown spots that are larger and more evenly spaced than in Heteroconger pelligrini.

Size: grows to at least 50 cm.

Habitat: sandy bottoms.

Depth: 5-30 m?.

Southern Baja and the SE Gulf of California to Panama.
