Main identification features
  • ll: 2 overlapping parts
  • c: pointed, confluent with dorsal and anal fins
  • operculum: 1 spine;preoperculum: 2 teeth
GRAMMONUS

BROTULAS

Head and body compressed, covered with scales except top of head and snout; eye small; mouth at front, oblique; jaws with bands of simple teeth; roof of mouth with V shaped band of teeth at front , no teeth at sides; operculum with a short rear spine, preoperculum with two short projections at angle; each pelvic reduced to a fine filament inserted under operculum; dorsal and anal fins joined to tail fin; lateral line in two parts, upper along upper front 3/4 of body, lower along midbody from anal fin origin to tail.

This genus, which occurs in the east and west Atlantic and the western Pacific as well as our region, contains 6 species, one of which is endemic to our region.
