Overview
Main identification features
  • nasal organ: papilla + cross tube
  • wide, convex between eyes
  • back and sides - dense spots
  • back and belly: skin prickly
Body robust, oval; head low and broad, notably wider than deep; snout short (37-39% of head length); wide and convex between eyes; nasal organ a low, broad papilla, with a transverse tube, with a cluster of small pits on inner surface of the tube; skin on back and abdomen with prickles; dorsal fin inserted slightly nearer tip of tail than eye; anal fin similar to dorsal, inserted just behind base of last dorsal ray; tail edge straight, lower lobe rounded; pectoral broad; fins blunt.

Upper half of head and body dark, paler below; with variable yellowish markings: in some specimens back and upper sides with evenly distributed, variably sized (from 1/2 eye to larger than eye), variably spaced dark spots, in others spots are arranged (sometimes nearly united) in concentric circles, with smallest ring in center of back, all gradations between these two patterns occur; young specimens - cross lines on head, concentric rings enclosing rings on back, reticulations on sides; larger specimens - pale yellow predominates, ground color and lines and rings are broken into dark spots; tail dusky, other fins greenish.

Size: 26 cm.

Habitat: demersal on coastal soft bottoms, common in estuaries.

Depth: 0-10 m.

Costa Rica to Ecuador.
