Bussing’s Brotula

Snout pointed; eyes large (2.2-2.5 % of standard length); relatively wide between eyes (5.5% of SL) body elongate, compressed, decreasing to slender tail base; large pores along lower and upper jaws, and on top of head, pore at top corner of operculum tubular; 3 pores at lower corner of preoperculum; each pelvic fin consists of a filament inserted under gill cover and reaching 2/3 distance to anal fin; top jaw with a knob at its lower rear corner that is before the top rear corner; front of roof of mouth with 8 larger rear teeth, and granular teeth at front; jaws with inner row pointed teeth that become larger towards front, and outer rows of granular teeth; opercular spine weak, covered with skin; upper part of first gill arch with 2 small knobs and 1 long raker, lower part with 4 long rakers and 7 small knobs; front nostril low on snout, closer to lip than is rear nostril, rear nostril large (~1/2 eye diameter); dorsal fin 79-81 rays, its origin a little behind base of pectoral; anal 56-58 rays; tail 16 rays; head with narrow vertical band of scales on cheek; scales small, imbedded, covering body; lateral line in 2 parts, top part (16 pores) from above corner of opercle to just before anal fin origin, lower part (28 pores) from behind pectoral to rear end of body .


Color of preserved fish: Body light brown with many small black dots; eyes dark; dorsal, anal and tail fins purplish brown with white edges.

Depth and habitat not known, but other species in the genus burrow in mud at depths less than 10m

Reaches at least 6.8cm

Known only from Isla del Caño, Costa Rica
