Click on image to enlarge. © Copyright Photographer/SFTEP, 2002 · 0 Gymnothorax buroensis 2 thumbnails  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features front light brown + dark mottling rear: brown + short, narrow white bars margin of tail yellow Dorsal and anal fins covered with skin, but clearly evident; dorsal fin origin above level of gill opening; rear nostril not tubular, at most a raised rim; teeth pointed and well developed; three large canines on lower jaw in an inner row at front of jaw. Light brown at front, finely mottled with dark brown; rear of body dark brown with narrow white marks, sometimes forming diffuse crossbars; margin of tail yellowish. Size: reaches 47 cm. Habitat: rocky bottoms. Depth: 1-10 m. Widespread in the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Americas; in the eastern Pacific known from Costa Rica and western Panama, and Clipperton, Cocos and the Galapagos.
