Overview
Main identification features
  • brown; eye in dark ring
  • both jaws: row white dots
Dorsal and anal fins covered with skin, but clearly evident; dorsal fin origin well in front of level of gill opening; posterior nostrils not tubular, at most a raised rim; teeth pointed and well developed; outer series of teeth in jaws thickened, bent abruptly backwards at tips, their rear margins serrate; posterior nostril not tubular, at most with a raised rim.

Medium brown, yellowish brown on head; eye surrounded by a dark brown ring; pores on jaws surrounded by white.

Size: grows to 75 cm.

Habitat: rocky bottoms.

Depth: 1-20 m.

Southern Baja and the lower 2/3 of the Gulf of California to Ecuador, plus the Revillagigedos, Clipperton, Cocos, Malpelo and the Galapagos.
