  • dorsal fin and a: soft parts densely scaled
  • mouth small, red inside
  • preopercle finely serrated
  • a: 2nd and 3rd spines similar
HAEMULON

GRUNTS

Body oblong, compressed; mouth small to moderate, lips not fleshy; inside mouth red; preoperculum finely serrated, without spines; dorsal fin continuous, with small to moderate notch in middle; tail forked; soft dorsal and anal densely & completely scaled to the edge of the fin.

A neotropical genus 18 species; with 5 endemic representatives in our region.
