Overview
Main identification features
  • dark grey + pale lines
  • dorsal fin and a: grey
  • c: inner 2/3 black
Dorsal rays XII-XIV, 15-18 (usually XIII,15-16); anal rays III,8-11 (usually 10); lateral-line scales 50-52; gill rakers on first arch 22-29 (usually 23-26); body depth 2.8-3.2 in standard length; scale rows of side parallel to longitudinal axis of body (obliquely oriented in other species of Haemulon).

Grey; scale centres white, forming narrow white stripes on side; basal half of caudal fin blackish; juveniles with dark midlateral stripe and spot at base of caudal fin.

Size: to 30 cm.

Habitat: forms large aggregations on coral or rocky reefs.

Depth: 1-33 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Ecuador and Malpelo.
