Overview
Main identification features
  • silver + oblique brown lines
  • fins yellowish
  • black spot tail fin base
Dorsal rays XI-XII, 15-17 (usually XII, 16); anal rays III, 8- 10 (usually 9); lateral-line scales 49-53; gill rakers on first arch 19-25 (usually 23); body depth 2.5-2.8 in standard length.

Overall silvery to silvery grey; sides with narrow oblique brownish bars corresponding with scale rows; a prominent black spot at base of caudal fin; fins yellowish; juveniles with brownish-orange midlateral stripe with pearly-white upper and lower border converging with black spot at base of tail fin, also 2-3 diffuse brownish-orange stripes on back.

Size: attains 30 cm.

Habitat: forms schools in sandy areas adjacent to reefs.

Depth: 1-75 m.

Western Atlantic and eastern Pacific; southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru.
