Elongate; snout relatively long; forehead profile straight; mouth not reaching to under front edge of eye; dorsal rays XII,14-15; anal rays III,7-8; lateral-line scales 50-54; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 10-14; body depth 2.9-3.3 in standard length; pectoral fin reaching beyond tip of pelvics, but not reaching anus; second anal spine longer than eye diameter; length of depressed anal spines reaching only to base of penultimate anal ray.

Generally silver; upper lips, rear of lower lips blackish; diffuse dark stripes sometimes evident on side; upper edge of gill opening narrowly blackish; dorsal and tail fins dusky, anal and pelvics yellowish.

Size: attains 30 cm.

Habitat: frequents coastal seas on sandy or muddy bottoms.

Depth: 0-66 m.

Southern Baja and the lower 3/4 of the Gulf of California to Peru.

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Robust somewhat compressed and not very deep body (from 2.8 to 3.0 times in the standard length). Very small and terminal mouth whose posterior edge is located in front of the anterior edge of the eye. The profile of the head is straight. Has 19 to 21 rakers in the first gill arch. The dorsal fins is very notched with 12 spines and 14 to 15 soft rays (XII, 14-15). The second anal fin is stronger but shorter than the third. When plied the third spine never surpasses the base of the last anal ray; Opaque gray body wit a lighter belly. The axilla of the pectoral fins and the upper edge of the operculum are black (Ref. 55763 ).
