Overview
Main identification features
  • dark blotch behind operculum

  • pectoral not to anus
  • a: 2nd spine very short (= eye)
Dorsal rays XII,14-15; anal rays III,7-9; lateral-line scales 50-53; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 14-16; body depth 2.8-3.3 in standard length; dorsal and ventral profile slope of head about equal; pectoral fins generally reaching level between tip of pelvic fins and anus; second anal spine very short, about equal to or less than eye diameter; third anal spine about same length as second spine, reaching to base of penultimate soft anal ray when depressed.

Generally silver; a black blotch at beginning of lateral line; diffuse dark stripes sometimes evident on side a long scale rows.

Size: attains 30 cm.

Habitat: coastal seas on sandy or muddy bottoms.

Depth: 0-50 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru.
