Overview
Main identification features
  • initial phase : pink, yellow operculum, white belly
  • terminal phase : blue-grey, dark tail fin red eye
Dorsal rays IX, 12; anal rays III, 12; pectoral rays 13; lateral line with 27 pored scales; teeth caniniform; pair of enlarged and curved canines at front of upper jaw with a smaller canine just behind on each side; tip of of lower jaw with single large projecting canine that fits in slot between large pair of canines at front of upper jaw; no canines present at rear corner of jaws.

Terminal adult males mainly pale greenish blue, iris pink, outer 1/3 of tail fin dark grey; initial phase adults largely pinkish white with mainly yellow head.

Size: attains at least 18 cm.

Inhabits rocky reefs.

Depth: 10-20 m.

Known only from Isla Malpelo, Colombia.
