Main identification features
- initial phase : greenish + row black and white blotches
- terminal phase : greenish + thin pale bars, red fins
Dorsal rays IX, 11; anal rays III, 11; pectoral rays 13; lateral line with 27 pored scales; jaw teeth caniniform; a pair of enlarged, curved canines at front of upper jaw and 2 pairs at front of lower jaw; rear of upper jaw without enlarged canines.
Initial phase dark green on upper half, light green below, about 5-6 alternating yellow and black patches along upper back; terminal phase with 7-8 blackish bars on upper half of body with narrow yellow bars between, a blackish patch behind pectoral fin, and caudal fin red. Color pattern of juveniles is similar to that of H. chierchiae, except very small fish are almost black, with a clear tail fin, and a narrow white bar across the body just behind the pectoral fin.
Maximum size to 26 cm.
Habitat: rocky shores.
Habitat: common in shallows (1-10 m) exposed to surge.
Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to northern Peru, including the Revillagigedos, Malpelo and the Galapagos.
