Overview
Main identification features Dorsal rays 17-18; anal rays 15-17; top jaw with 2 toothed bones; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 28-34; body moderately deep, about 2.9-3.0 in standard length; operculum smooth without bony striae; none of dorsal fin rays forming elongate filament; rear margin of gill opening with two fleshy lobes, row of keeled scales along belly.

Irridescent blue on back, silvery on sides; a black spot behind operculum; a faint yellowish stripe on upper side.

Size: grows to 18.4 cm.

Habitat: forms large inshore schools.

Depth: 0-10 m?.

Southern California to the Gulf of California to Peru.
