Dorsal rays IX-X,13-15; anal rays III,7-9; pectoral rays 17-18 (rarely 16); pored lateral-line scales 52-55 (occasionally 56-59); rakers on first gill arch, including rudiments, 31-33 (rarely 34); third dorsal spine long and filamentous, at least in adults; tail fin deeply forked, middle rays longest; pelvics long, passing origin of anal fin.

Reddish pink with red spotting on back and upper part of head; sides pink with yellow blotches and spots; fins pink to orange red.

Size: grows to 45 cm.

Inhabits rocky reefs.

Depth: 20-120 m.

Southern California to the Gulf of California to northern Peru, the Galapagos.
