Dorsal rays VII or VIII+I,25-31; anal rays II+I,22-25; length of pectoral fin 23-29% of fork length, fin reaches anal fin origin; gill rakers on first arch (excluding rudiments) 7-10 + 18-23; lateral line with pronounced, short arch; scutes in straight part of lateral line 47-55; breast completely scaled.

Dark olive to deep blue above, dusky silvery below; a large jet-black blotch on base of pectoral fins; fins dark, not yellow; juveniles with 4-5 dark bars on side.

Maximum size to 32.5 cm.

Habitat: over soft bottoms. Common inshore, often found in schools.

Depth: 0-30 m.
