Overview
Main identification features
  • snout blunt; eye large;mouth long, at front
  • d: low, orgin behind pectoral
  • tail: less than 1/2 total length no c
  • barbel behind front nostril
  • pectoral minute, above gill opening
HERPETOICHTHYS

SNAKE-EELS

Body cylindrical; tail a little shorter than head and trunk; dorsal and anal fins present; dorsal fin origin behind gill opening; pectorals small, narrow based; snout blunt; jaws about equal length; teeth pointed; front nostril tubular, with large hanging barbel behind on top lip; rear nostril opens in mouth; gill opening a vertical crescent on lower side.

This genus contains 2 species, one in the middle and eastern Atlantic, and one endemic to our region.
