Head length <1/3 pectoral length; pectoral very long, reaching past anal base; no branch of lateral line to origin of pectoral; top jaw not protrusible; pelvic origin nearer anal origin than pectoral; pelvics long, reaching past anal origin; anal origin before 3rd dorsal ray; 32-35 scales before dorsal fin; first 2 rays of pectoral fin unbranched; palate without teeth; 11 dorsal rays; 12 anal rays juveniles without barbels under chin.

Dark blue-green above, silvery below; body with 1 broad dark bar immediately in front of pectoral and 2 after; pectoral dark with broad clear margin; dorsal and anal clear; tail pale, pelvics dusky, with dark blotch.

Size: 21 cm.

Habitat: oceanic and coastal pelagic.

Depth: surface, 0-5 m.

Southern Baja to Peru, the Revillagigedos, Cocos, the Galapagos and Malpelo.
