HYPOATHERINA

SILVERSIDES

Eye large; head relatively deep, with bony crest on top, top profile straight; mouth not extendible, large (reaching to under front edge of eye); top of upper jaw straight; teeth small, simple, none on tongue; projection at rear of lower jaw inside mouth large, high; gill rakers long, slender; dorsal origin well before anal origin, near middle of standard length; V-VI spines on first dorsal fin; anus under base of 1st dorsal fin; pelvics inserted nearer pectoral base than anus; large scales under pectoral base and on operculum.

A tropical genus with 9 species, found in the Indo-central Pacific and tropical west Atlantic; one species from the latter area was introduced into our region.
