Ridge just before eye; top jaw covered with scales; lower jaw relatively short, less than twice head length; 37-50 rakers on first gill arch; distance from pelvic origin to tail fin base more than distance from pelvic origin to front edge of pupil in 96% of individuals (reaching to before the tip of the top jaw in some individuals), reaching between pupil and front of eye in 4%; dorsal 14-15 rays, origin behind anus; anal 15-18 rays, origin behind dorsal origin; bases of dorsal and anal scaly; pectorals short.

Back brown, edges of scales dark, upper back with 3 narrow dark stripes; belly and sides silver; mid flank - distinct grey stripe with black top border; snout and beak black, with red tip; fins dusky to transparent.

Size: 21 cm.

Habitat: coastal pelagic.

Depth: surface, 0-5 m?.

Southern Baja and the central Gulf of California to northern Peru, and the Galapagos.
