Click on image to enlarge. © Copyright Ross Robertson, 2006 · 12 Hyporhamphus naos 2 thumbnails  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features beak: long, red fleshy tip dorsal fin and a: scaly gill rakers: 29-39 pelvic to tail fin distance less than pelvic to pupil distance anal fin origin ~under dorsal fin origin Dorsal rays 14-16; anal rays 15-17; anal fin origin under dorsal fin origin; pectoral rays 11-12 (usually 11); lower jaw greatly prolonged, with fleshy tip; total rakers on first gill arch 29-39; pectoral fins relatively short, not reaching nostril when folded forward; distance from pelvic to tail fin less than distance pelvic fin to pupil in 43% of individuals, to the front edge of the pupil in 43% and to between the front of the pupil and just before the eye in 14% ; tail fin concave; scales present on snout; well developed ridge before eye; bases of dorsal and anal fins covered with scales. Greenish on back, silvery white below; flank with dark bordered silver stripe; lower jaw with red tip; tail clear, with dark border. Size: reaches 31 cm. Habitat: surface inshore and estuarine waters. Depth: 30 m. Southern California through the Gulf of California to Peru, plus the Galapagos and Malpelo. Attributes Abundance: Common.
