Overview
Main identification features
  • nape: warts, side groove to eye

Dorsal rays XII, 15-16; anal rays II, 17; nape with fleshy warts and a lateral groove behind the eye; front nostril and upper margin of the eye each with a tuft of small cirri, no cirrus on nape; teeth in jaws incisor-like, in a single series and not movable; gill openings restricted to sides of body by fusion of gill membranes to throat; dorsal fin with very slight notch between spiny and soft parts.

Wavy, irregular dark brown and light tan bars on side, extending on to dorsal fin; head largely dark brown with light and dark bars on lips, chin and throat.

Size: attains 9 cm.

Inhabits rocky reefs covered with algae, shallow waters, including tide pools.

Depth: 1-5 m.

Nicaragua to Peru, Malpelo.
