Gill openings restricted to sides of body by fusion of gill cover membranes to throat; nostril with a cirrus; 1 pair heavily branched cirri above eyes; jaw teeth incisor-like, in 1 row, immovable; dorsal XI-XIII, 15-19, little or no notch between spiny & soft parts; anal II, 15-20; pelvic I, 3; lateral line ends above origin of anal fin.
Head pale, with 2 thin dark bars under eye, usually a dark crescent behind eye, lower side of head without red color; body mottled brown, often tinged with red, series of short dark bars under dorsal fin; dorsal & anal lightly speckled, tail with 2 faint bars, dark smudge on base of pectoral.
Size: 13 cm.
Habitat: in burrows of boring clams & worm tubes on rocky shores, also in mussel beds.
Depth: 1-20 m.
California to central Baja and the northern half of the Gulf of California.
