Overview
Main identification features
  • eye: 1 cirrus long, branched
  • d: high, origin over preopercle, no notch after spines
  • large dark blotch behind eye
  • lower body: thin wavy dark bars
Dorsal rays XII, 16; anal rays II, 17-18; a small cirrus above posterior nostril; a branched cirrus above eye, relatively long and slender, at least in some specimens; no cirri on nape; teeth in jaws incisor-like, in a single series and not movable; gill openings restricted to sides of body by the fusion of the gill membranes to the throat; dorsal fin not notched between spiny and soft parts; its origin forward (over the preopercle).

Mottled olive on back with 5-6 short, broad dark bars below base of dorsal fin, lower half white with many narrow vertical black lines; a large, dark brown to blackish blotch behind eye.

Size: attains 8 cm.

Inhabits shallow reefs and tide pools.

Depth: 0-5 m.

Costa Rica and Panama.
