Body a deep, compressed oval; mouth small, at front; teeth simple chisel-like; 1 pair nostrils; bone under eye not fused to cheek, without notch at front; preopercle edge smooth, without scales; tail bluntly forked; 1 dorsal fin, XII,16-17; anal II,13-14; lateral line ends under dorsal rays, 19-20 scales; scales rough.
Adult with bright orange body and fins; eye green; juvenile bright orange with iridescent blue spots.
Size: 36 cm.
Habitat: rocky bottoms.
Depth: 1-30 m.
California to the SW Gulf of California.
