Etymology: Icelinus: From Icelus = the Morpheus name; mythology ;   pietschi: Named for Theodore W. Pietsch, University of Washington, Seattle, principal investigator for the International Kuril Island Project, 1994-1999, during which the species was discovered (Ref. 45337 ) .

Dorsal spines (total): 10; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-14; Anal spines : 0; Anal soft rays : 11 - 12; Vertebrae : 32 - 34. No spines on upper posterior margin of orbit, parietal, or posttemporal; a single common opening of terminal mandibular pore just behind symphysis; a slender cirrus on base of nasal spine; uppermost preopercular spine without denticles dorsally; two dorsal scale rows originating under 1st or 2nd spine on first dorsal fin, terminating before posterior end of second dorsal fin base; scales absent on pectoral axilla; first dorsal fin moderate, anterior spines not produced; pelvic fin extending more than one-third distance to origin of anal fin (Ref. 45337 ).
