  • nostrils: front = hole, rear in mouth
ICHTHYAPUS

SAND-EELS, SNAKE-EELS

Body elongate, cylindrical, pointed at both ends, entirely finless; head and trunk shorter than tail; snout pointed, depressed, overhanging, underside flattened and grooved; front nostril a flat hole, rear one opens into mouth; gill openings below, converging forward; teeth pointed, in single rows on jaws.

The genus is known from all tropical seas, and has ~6 species. Two species, one of them undescribed, are regional endemics of the eastern Pacific.
