Overview
Main identification features
  • snout pointed, overhanging; eyes minute
  • no fins
  • tail tip hard point
  • nostrils: front = hole, rear in mouth
  • pale
Tail tip a hard finless point; body elongate, cylindrical pointed at both ends; tail (tail tip to anus) much longer than head and trunk (snout tip to anus); all fins absent; gill openings entirely under body; snout pointed and depressed, grooved and flattened on underside; teeth pointed, in single rows; posterior nostril opening inside mouth; anterior nostril not tubular.

Overall creamy yellow.

Size: grows to 54 cm.

Habitat: sandy bottoms.

Depth: 5-30 m.

SW Gulf of California to Ecuador, the Revillagigedos, Galapagos and Cocos.
