Dorsal rays 16, fin in center of body, its origin just before anal origin, anal rays 46-50; body moderately slender, its depth about 2.8-3.3 in standard length; forehead concave; eye large; mouth oblique, lower jaw projecting; pelvic fins very tiny, below tip of pectoral fin ; breast and belly strongly compressed with 23-25 + 11-14 scutes.
Overall silvery; pectoral and tail yellow, pectoral with a black tip.
Size: to 28.5 cm.
Habitat: coastal seas, frequently entering estuaries and brackish river mouths.
Depth: 0-10 m?.
Central Mexico to northern Peru.
