Body slender, fusiform; eye relatively large; snout relatively short, bluntly pointed; nostrils on side of snout; teeth long, narrow, not serrated, relatively straight; origin of first dorsal fin a little behind pectoral; 5 long gill slits, all before pectoral; second dorsal and anal fins very small; tail almost symmetrical, semilunar; tail base flattened, with large keel that extends onto tail; pectorals very long, longer than head, tip bluntly pointed; origin of anal under end of base of second dorsal.

Back and sides intense blue; belly white; underside of snout and mouth dusky.

Size: 417 cm.

Habitat: oceanic, inshore when giving birth.

Depth: surface to 760 m.

Southern California to Mexico, occurrence between Mexico and Peru likely but there are no verified records.
