Overview
Main identification features Snout pointed; mouth small; dorsal rays XII, 24-25; anal rays III, 18-20; pectoral rays 16; lateral-line scales 52-63; membranes between anterior dorsal spines moderately incised; dorsal spines increasing in length to third or fourth spine then decreasing in length; second anal spine much shorter than pelvic fin length; lateral line complete.

Yellow with black bands on snout, across eyes and forehead, and along base of dorsal fin; also a black area around eye; edge of gill cover black.

Maximum size, 20 cm.

Habitat: usually seen in small to very large aggregations on reefs.

Depth: 5-40 m.

The central Gulf of California to central Peru, also all the offshore islands.
