Etymology: Kumba: Named for the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, whose research vessel Sarsia dredged the type species. ;   punctulata: From the Latin 'punctulatus' meaning dotted, referring to the dense covering of melanophores on the head. .

Dorsal spines (total): 2. Firm, non-inflated head, its sensory canals with enlarged pores. Dorsally scaleless snout extend onto forehead as 2 projections lateral to median rostral ridge. Orbit diameter 37-43% of head length; snout about 1/2-3/4 orbit, about 1.1-1.3 into broad interorbital width; upper jaw 40-41% HL; barbel 16-19% HL. Well-developed light organ. 1D II,9-11 (Ref. 11651 ).
