Overview
Main identification features
  • grey and /or yellow
  • d: 11
  • soft dorsal and anal finshigh, at front
  • a: 11
Body elliptical, oblong, robust, depth 44% of length, upper and lower profiles symmetrically convex; no hump or depression before eyes; teeth broad, compressed, with rounded to nearly straight tips, 1 row of about 36 on each jaw; top jaw relatively long, reaching under pupil; 22 short rakers on 1st gill arch; preopercle with minutely serrated vertical edge, angle rounded and with membrane; pectoral short (length 63% of head), slightly longer than pelvics, as long as from snout to edge of preopercle; pelvics inserted well behind pectorals, not reaching anus; dorsal fin XI,11, middle spines longer than longest rays, soft dorsal rather high; anal fin III,11, moderately high at front (longest ray 67% of length of base of soft fin), rays longer than on dorsal fin; tail wide, moderately forked, lobes as long as or a little longer than head; scales small, 67-72 below lateral line, 12 rows above lateral line, 22 below, 10-11 rows on cheeks; head scaly except before eyes, on jaws and snout and rounded part of preopercle; soft parts of fins scaly.

Color variable: dark-phase fish are uniform light grey with faint dark stripes along scale rows of flanks, opercle and lower jaw silvery, tips of jaws dusky, fins pale; yellow-phase individuals are entirely bright lemon yellow, with a dark eye; other individuals are dark variably blotched with yellow.

Size: reaches 40 cm.

Habitat: shallow rocky reefs.

Depth: 0-20 m.

Apparently restricted to the Revillagigedo Islands.

This species is similar to K. elegans but has a shallower body (44% vs 50% of length), no hump before the eyes, smaller scales (lateral scales 67-72 vs 59-63, cheek scale rows 10-11 vs 8-9, fewer dorsal fin rays (11 vs 13) a higher anal fin (longest ray is 67% vs 50% of length of base of soft fin) with fewer rays (11 vs 12) , broader, more compressed teeth, and a longer top jaw (reaches under pupil vs under front edge of eye). In addition the dark flank stripes are fainter and narrower in dark-phase K. lutescens.
