Overview
Main identification features
  • body: ~5 bars
  • d: 1st 3-4 spines high
  • opercle - dark blotch
Dorsal rays XX, 10 to 12; anal rays II, 19-20; pectoral rays 13; lateral-line scales 59-65; head scaleless; roof of mouth - teeth at sides larger than those at center front; an enlarged canine behind patch of small teeth on each side of upper and lower jaw; cirri present on nostrils, above eye, and on nape; nape cirri about half the width of gill cover; first dorsal very tall, longer than or equal to the length of the longest soft rays; dorsal fin indented at fourth to fifth spines and again at junction between spinous and soft rays; the combination of 20 dorsal spines, presence of enlarged canines, and tall first dorsal spine is distinctive for this species.

Overall greenish brown with strongly mottled pattern, usually a series of 4-5 diffuse dark bars on side and relatively large blackish spot on upper portion of gill cover; median fins with oblique dark bands or small spots; nuptial males assume a drastically different pattern and are overall white with a series of black double bars on side and bright orange markings on the gill cover.

Size: reaches at least 13 cm.

Habitat: the most abundant member of the genus at the Galapagos, it occurs on shallow, weed-covered rocky reefs.

Depth: 1-25 m.

Galapagos and Malpelo Island.
