Overview
Main identification features
  • cheek: 2 oblique stripes
  • body mottled; fins: rows spots
  • lateral line has 65-69 scales
Dorsal rays XVII to XIX, 11-13; anal rays II, 17 or 18; pectoral rays 13-15; lateral-line scales 65-69; a few scales present along upper margin of gill cover; cheek scaleless; no enlarged canines behind smaller teeth in jaws; cirri present on nostrils, above eye, and on nape; a dense covering of sensory pores on head, especially behind eye; no pronounced indentation at front part of spinous dorsal fin; dorsal fin indented at junction between spinous and soft rays.

Overall brownish with heavy dark brown mottling on sides; a pair of oblique brown bands across cheek; prominent dark spotting on dorsal, caudal, and pectoral fins.

Size: Attains at least 13 cm.

Inhabits weed-covered rocky reefs.

Depth: 1-20 m.

Central Baja California and the Gulf of California to Peru, including the Revillagigedos and Galapagos Islands.
