Dorsal rays X + I,27-29; anal rays II,6; pored lateral-line scales 46-55; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 15-18, total 23-26; mouth very strongly oblique (almost vertical), ends before front of eye, lower jaw projecting; nape slightly concave; eye moderate, 3.9-5.0 in head length; bony ridge on top of head spongy to touch; 2 minute pores on tip of chin, no barbel; teeth small, in single row; margin of preopercle without serrations; pectoral and pelvic fin tips reaching to level of anus; second anal spine strong, slightly shorter than first soft ray; caudal fin very bluntly pointed, more pointed in young; soft dorsal and anal fins with scaly sheath on basal half.
Color silvery, greyish blue on upper back;sometimes with faint dark stripes on sides; axil of pectoral fin dark; fins clear to slightly yellowish.
Size: to 35 cm.
Inhabits coastal waters, common in estuaries.
Depth: 1-50 m.
Southern Baja and the SE Gulf of California to northern Peru.
