Dorsal rays X + I, 26-28; anal rays II, 6; pored lateral-line scales 50; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 20-21, total 31-33; mouth not as oblique as most other members of the genus, much more horizontal, ends behind center of eye; lower jaw projecting slightly; eye 3.6-4.0 in head length; no barbel on chin; teeth small, in 1-2 series; margin of preopercle without serrations; pectoral fins relatively long, reaching to about level of anus; pelvic fins shorter, reaching about half way to anal fin origin; second anal spine strong, but shorter than soft rays; tail margin bluntly pointed; soft dorsal and anal fins with scaly sheath on basal half.

Color silver, greyish on upper back; sides sometimes with darkish stripes following scale rows; axil of pectoral fin dark; fins pale to dusky.

Size: reaches length of at least 30 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters.

Depth: 1-50 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to northern Peru, the Galapagos.

Body moderately short, and not very deep; back little arched or elevated; mouth large and oblique; posterior end of upper jaw extending beyond center of eye; snout with 3 dorsql pores; lower branch of first gill arch with 20 to 21 gill rakers; pectoral fins with 16 to 17 rays; ctenoid scales on body; body gray to silvery brown, darker dorsally; flanks with very distinct black stripes along the scales rows; fins pale to grayish (Ref. 55763 ).
