Dorsal rays III+XIII+10-11, segmented rays branched except first two and penultimate ray sometimes unbranched; anal rays II, 18-20; pectoral rays 17; pelvic rays I, 2; lateral line more or less horizontal; lateral line with 24-26 tubed scales followed three rows below by 8-11 notched scales; total scales in longitudinal series 35; orbital cirrus lanceolate; scales rough except smooth on belly; upper half of preopercle covered with small scales; scales absent on pectoral-fin base; small spinules on edge of orbits, margin of preopercle, nape, and dorsal surface of snout.
Dark brown to bright red bars or saddles on dorsal half of body, the posterior ones extending onto lower side; the bars frequently joined to form wide a midlateral stripe; a dark brown to red band at base of tail fin; a pair of brilliant pearl white saddles on back on rear half of body; first dorsal fin red and white; pectorals yellowish; tail fin with red or brown bars.
Size: reaches 6.8 cm.
Inhabits rocky reefs.
Depth: 5-30 m.
Known only from Isla Malpelo.
